Hazel Bruce

A practicing textile artist since graduating from Manchester Polytechnic in 1990, Hazel joined the 62 Group of Textile Artists a year later.  Born in Leeds, she moved to Belfast in 1992 and has worked in further and higher education, community arts and the museum sector.She has postgraduate qualifications in Applied Arts, Museums Studies and Higher Education and is currently joint Course Director of Textile Art, Design and Fashion specializing in embroidery and textile art.Hazel is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a member of the Centre for Higher Education Research and Practice and is Learning and Teaching Coordinator for Belfast School of Art.She exhibits nationally and internationally, contributing work to group shows at Macclesfield Silk Museum, the Gallery of Costume at Platt Hall (Manchester), Rijswijk Museum (the Netherlands), the Collins Gallery (Glasgow) and the National Centre for Craft and Design (Lincolnshire). Her work is represented in a number of museum and gallery collections including the Whitworth Art Gallery (Manchester), Krosno Museum (Poland) and Bankfield Museum (Halifax).  Recent work explores the impact of limitations on art practice and current work explores the importance of compositional space and is a response to research into Basic Design, an approach to art education developed in Art Colleges between the 50’s and 80’s
