About
Dr Giuliano Campo is an internationally recognised theatre practitioner who integrates Practice-as-Research, traditional scholarship and teaching. His expertise has been recognised by his appointment as a Visiting Professor at MXAT - Moscow Art Theatre School (2008), and in Brazil at the Federal Universities of Rio de Janeiro (2017) and Bahia (2023). He is Co-Convenor of the Performance, Religion & Spirituality Working Group of the prestigious International Federation for Theatre Research, and Co-Editor of the PRS journal. He has an extensive track record of collaboration with international artists and researchers, including in Japan, Brazil, Ghana, India, the Philippines, and the USA.
His academic standing has been recognised by his appointment as a panel member for the Italian research assessment exercise, VQR, for two research cycles. The value of his experience is attested to by invitations to serve on the editorial boards of leading Brazilian journals: Voz e Cena, Repertório, and Rascunhos. He is a member of the European Alliance for Social Sciences and Humanities – Task Force for Green and Digital Transition; the Irish Humanities Alliance (IHA) Environmental Humanities Working Group; the Voice and Speech Trainers Association (VASTA); and Costituente Terra, the Promoting Committee of the International Network of Constituent Earth.
Dr Campo’s theatre practice is rooted in his international doctoral research on Simone Weil and Theatre (conducted in Rome and Paris), and in his training with the founding members of the International School of Theatre Anthropology, directed by Eugenio Barba. Before joining the British Grotowski Project at the University of Kent (directed by Paul Allain, 2006–2009), he had already published on Grotowski’s paratheatre and led the theatre laboratory Towards an Active Culture and the company Ypsos Teatro. He has since collaborated for several years with former members of Grotowski’s Teatr Laboratorium, including Zygmunt Molik and Rena Mirecka. Dr Campo is the author of Zygmunt Molik’s Voice and Body Work: The Legacy of Jerzy Grotowski (Routledge, 2010), translated into multiple languages, and Acting the Essence: The Performer’s Work on the Self (2022). His work continues to explore the intersections of performance, embodiment, and spiritual practice.
Giuliano’s teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in integrating research into practice-based learning, as demonstrated in innovative modules like Theatre and Ritual and Commedia dell’Arte. The Brazilian book Grotowski: Estados Alterados de Consciência (2020), edited by Joice Aglae Brondani, draws extensively on Brazilian colleagues’ reflections on his pedagogical work, alongside his texts. This is the second edition of a successful book originally published in 2015.
He has served as Course Director of Drama at Ulster University since 2014, and he is External Examiner at UEL – University of East London.
Administrative Duties
Giuliano is the Course Director of the Drama BA (Hons) courses at Ulster University.
Supervision
Giuliano has served as an external examiner, referee, and has successfully supervised PhD and postdoctoral research projects to completion. He is currently supervising two international students on Grotowski studies and Kurdish cinema. He is eager to supervise in areas related to Theatre and Performance Studies and their intersections with film, as well as his core areas of expertise: ritual arts, theatre anthropology, contemporary performance, actor and performer training, directing, practice as research, and the legacies of Grotowski and Stanislavski, and vocal practices.
