About
Giuliano Campo is a performer, director, author, and Lecturer in Drama at Ulster University (UK). He pursued his international doctoral research on Simone Weil and Theatre in Rome and Paris, and trained with the founding members of ISTA, the International School of Theatre Anthropology, directed by Eugenio Barba. He collaborated for several years with Jerzy Grotowski’s Teatr Laboratorium actors Zygmunt Molik and Rena Mirecka, and published the books Zygmunt Molik’s Voice and Body Work: The Legacy of Jerzy Grotowski (2010) with Routledge, translated into multiple languages, and Acting the Essence: The Performer’s Work on the Self (2022).
He has published extensively on Grotowski as part of the British Grotowski Project (University of Kent, directed by Paul Allain, 2006–2009) and beyond, covering topics such as acting, voice and body, directing, and ritual arts, in multiple languages.
Giuliano has been a Visiting Professor at MXAT - Moscow Art Theatre School (2008), and in Brazil at the Federal Universities of Rio de Janeiro (2017) and Bahia (2023). His teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in integrating research into practice-based learning, as demonstrated in innovative modules like Theatre and Ritual and Commedia dell’Arte. The Brazilian book Grotowski: Estados Alterados de Consciência (2020), edited by Joice Aglae Brondani, draws extensively on Brazilian colleagues’ reflections on his pedagogical work, alongside his texts. This is the second edition of a successful book originally published in 2015.
