Gillian Shorter is a Reader in Psychology in the Institute of Mental Health Sciences at Ulster University. She leads the Ulster Social Justice and Substance Use Research Group in the School of Psychology.

Dr Shorter's research focuses on alcohol and drug use; major contributors to change in psychological wellbeing and health. Her research includes work on change in substance use including alcohol brief interventions, overdose prevention, long-term alcohol problems, and harm reduction initiatives. She works to involve experts by experience in her work from idea to implementation. Dr Shorter has expertise in trials and reviews methodology principally recruitment, retention, and outcome selection particularly in mental health. Her work has been supported through funding from the Medical Research Council, Extern, Karolinska Institutet, Home Office, Public Health Agency, HSC R&D Office, Economic and Social Research Council, British Tinnitus Association, and Alcohol Change UK.

Dr Shorter has previously held posts at Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin and Health Services Executive (Senior Research Fellow), Teesside University (Research Fellow), Nottingham Trent University (Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Psychology), Ulster University (Lecturer in Clinical and Population Trial Methodology, Research Fellow and Associate), and Department of Health Social Services and Public Safety (Health Services Researcher)
