Farid Arya is a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering. He did his PhD in the field of Vacuum Glazing at Ulster University (2010 – 2014). His study focused on the practical development and evaluation of advanced low heat loss glazing. Specifically, his research has enabled the development of a novel sealing system for the fabrication of vacuum insulation glazing. 

He worked on a three year research project (2013 - 2016) for the development of a flat plate vacuum solar collector which used the edge sealing technology developed under his PhD. The project was a collaborative project between Ulster University, the University of Warwick and Loughborough University.

For six months he worked in the field of Biomass in collaboration with Queen’s University. He did different tests such as Moisture content tests, Ash content tests, Ash melting tests and Calorific value tests.

Since Jan 2017, he has been working on a research project (HORIZON 2020 funded) collaborating with 13 universities and industry-based research groups from across the EU such as UCL, UNIVPM, SAES and AGC. Their common aim is to develop a novel highly insulating energy efficient glass façade for the cost effective retrofitting and construction of new buildings.

He did his postgraduate and undergraduate in the field of Solid State Physics. His masters project looked at the effect of annealing on crystal structure and lattice constants particularly in magnetic materials. From 2002 till 2010 he worked with different research groups on different subjects including Carbon-Nanotubes, Magnetic Materials and Superconductors. He is well-experienced in setting up experiments and doing simulation and computer modelling using Matlab and ABAQUS. He has been undertaking consultancy projects for local industry providing expertise on the evaluation and development of insulating products and systems. Since 2010, he has been undertaking teaching duties on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses at Ulster University. He is hoping to continue his research on Vacuum Technology and Solar Energy.
