Biography

Emma Rebecca Wallace is a third year PhD Researcher at Ulster University within the School of Psychology. She has previously completed a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, a BSc in Social Sciences, and a MSc in Health Psychology in 2020. She returned to Ulster University in September 2022 to begin her doctoral research, for which she was awarded an International Association of Suicide Prevention (IASP) fellowship. In the summer of 2024 Emma became a Board Trustee of The Rainbow Project, the largest LGBTQIA+ health and wellbeing organisation in Northern Ireland.

Research Interests

Emma's doctoral research is a mixed methods research project entitled 'Queering Suicide Prevention' which is focused on understanding suicide and suicide prevention among LGBTQA+ young people in Northern Ireland. Her PhD includes three studies; a quantitative study on mental health and suicidality among higher education students, a qualitative (IPA) study on the lived experiences of LGBTQA+ youth, and a qualitative study with suicide prevention and mental health service providers. 

Her primary research interests include risk and protective factors for suicidality among LGBTQA+ youth, mental health needs, suicide prevention, inclusive policies and education, trauma exposure, childhood adversities, health inequalites, intersectionality, queer theory, and critical suicide theory. 

Researcher Profile 

Emma presented findings from her scoping review on risk and protective factors for suicidality among LGBTQA+ young people at Stormont's All-Party Group (APG) on Suicide Prevention in January 2024. She is also a member of the  'Achieving Best Practice and Evidence' subgroup for 'Protect Life 2 Suicide Prevention Strategy. As part of this role, Emma submitted eight recommendations for changes to the Suicide Prevention Strategy for LGBTQA+ young people.  

In May 2024, Emma presented research findings on mental health disorders, childhood adverisites, recent stressors and suicidality among LGBTQA+ youth at the 'National Suicide Research Foundation'. In June 2024, Emma presented a paper on Queer Theory within suicide research at Ulster University's Queer/ing Research Conference. In June 2024, Emma presented at the Early and Mid-Career Researchers Suicide and Self-Harm Conference in Glasgow. In June 2024, Emma also became a Board Trustee for The Rainbow Project, Northern Ireland's largest LGBTQA+ Health and Wellbeing charity. 

Teaching Interests

In April 2024, Emma was invited to give a guest lecture on the 'Gender Studies in Psychology' undergraduate module at Queens University. This included an outline of her doctoral research, research findings, theoritical teaching on Intersectionality, Queer Theory, and Critical Suicide Theory as-well as mental health among young people. In October 2024, Emma taught an under-graduate Psychology class, delivering material and learning on essay writing and the module assignment at the Coleraine campus.

Emma has also recently demonstrated on the module PSY109 - Research Procedures in the Behavioural Sciences, providing online learning material and support for undergraduate students. She has also been demonstrating weekly on the MSc Advanced Research Methods module in Coleraine. Since November 2023, Emma has been working for 'The PhD Place' as a Writing Group lead, facilitating weekly online sessions for PhD researchers across the world. This role has included supporting other PhD researchers, creating online academic content, and hosting live Webinars on X and YouTube.
