Biography
Élise Féron is Professor and the Director of INCORE (International Conflict Research Institute) at Ulster University. She is an invited professor at the University of Turin (Italy), the Diplomatic School of Yerevan (Armenia), Sciences Po Lille (France), and the University of Coimbra (Portugal). Before moving to Northern Ireland, she held permanent positions at Tampere University (Finland), the University of Kent (UK), and Sciences Po Lille (France). Her main research interests include feminist peace research, diaspora politics, and the multiple entanglements between conflict, violence and peace, including the long-term consequences of disappearances. She has three decades of experience researching these issues in the South Caucasus, Eastern Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Northern Ireland, Madagascar and Cyprus, among other places.
She is one of the editors-in-chief of the Journal of Disappearance Studies (Bristol University Press) and serves on the advisory boards of other journals. She is also one of the co-editors of the book series, Routledge Advances in Feminist Peace Research. She has notably co-edited the Routledge Handbook of Feminist Peace Research (2021) and co-authored, with Tarja Väyrynen, Feminist Peace Research: An Introduction (Routledge, 2024).
She has chaired 7 major international projects over the past 15 years, among which two EU FP6 and FP7 projects, two EuropeAid projects, one KONE Foundation project, and two Academy of Finland (Research Council of Finland) projects. She is the PI of Re(E)EMBody – Rethinking Post-Conflict Reconciliation through Missing Bodies (2024-2028), and the leader of the Feminist Peace Working Group of the COST Action “Peace Community Europe” (2024-2028).
She has published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, 4 monographs and 10 edited or coedited books and journal special issues. She is also the author of around 30 policy briefs and research reports, and more than a hundred conference papers.
She has extensive teaching and supervision experience: over the past 25 years, she has taught more than 45 different courses at all university levels, from undergraduate to postgraduate and PhD levels, and in 13 different countries (Armenia, Belarus, Belgium, Burundi, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Moldova, Poland, Portugal, & the UK). She has extensive experience in developing full curricula and has convened 5 MA programs. In addition, to date she has supervised 9 PhD students to completion, is currently supervising 5 PhD students, and has participated in a dozen PhD students’ juries. She has also supervised 12 post-docs, and over 300 MA students.
