Biography

Overview

Dan Shipsides moved to Belfast in 1995 and graduated with an MFA in 1997. He held a Post Doctoral AHRC Fellowship from 2001-2004. He was a committee director at Catalyst Arts (96-98), and Bbeyond (2002-2007) and since 1997 has been based in and central to the artist-run Orchid Studios in Belfast. He is senior lecturer Course Director the MFA Fine Art at the Belfast School of Art. 

His multidisciplinary practice of (intervention, installation, image, moving image, drawing, music and performance +) might be considered a creative form of geography, exploring landscape and spatial narratives around cultural, social, political and environmental matters.

His term ‘pata-perception’ gives a frame to explore and accommodate the hybridisation of overlapping fields of imaginative and experiential enquiry.

He has been awarded several prestigious awards including:

  • AHRC Landscape and Environment Award (2006)
  • ACNI (Arts Council Northern Ireland) Major Artist Award (2004)
  • AHRC Creative Fellowship (2001)
  • Nissan Art Award (2000) and the Perspective Award (1998)

His work is in several national and international public and recently was the subject of podcasts looking at art and the natural environment through the lens of rock-climbing (e.g. From Deep Blue to Pale Blue, BBC Radio 3, BBC Sounds). Since 2004 he also works within the collaborative art duo; Shipsides and Beggs Projects.
