Dr Ciaran McAleenan lectures and researches in Safety Engineering and Disaster management
A Chartered Civil Engineer and Advanced Member of the Institution of Civil Engineer’s Health and Safety Register, working in industry since 1978, joining the Faculty at Ulster University in 2009. Ciaran is Chair of the ICE’s Expert Health and Safety Panel, leading on projects such as ‘designing for health’ guidance and professional competence. His particular research interests led to the co-creation of the Civic Ecology and Life Infrastructure group (CELI), a sub group of SABER. Projects under this group will address the societal challenges presented by UN Sustainable Development Goals, Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Examples of potential research projects include, among others:
A regular presenter at international safety, health and wellbeing conferences and a member of the Editorial Board of the ICE Journal, Management, Procurement and Law, Ciaran has edited two Special Issue journals on Safety, Health and Wellbeing. He is also the co-editor of the ICE Manual of Health and Safety in Construction.
A marathon runner, in the 80's Ciaran's focus now lies in mountain running. Running for miles is the perfect way of unscrambling the thoughts in preparation for writing, teaching or just relaxing. He has an eclectic taste in music with a strong preference is jazz and blues . If it comes out of the Delta "…it is probably going to be alright! Right?”.
