Brian is a higher education enhancement specialist and Registered Nurse whose work focuses on strategic approaches to curriculum, assessment, professional learning, and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in higher education practice. He brings together professional clinical experience and academic expertise to support institution-wide enhancement of learning, teaching, and the student experience.
His work is underpinned by a commitment to person-centred, evidence-informed, and reflective approaches to education, with particular expertise in curriculum enhancement, authentic assessment, and creative learning design. He works collaboratively with academic and professional services colleagues across disciplines to support inclusive and meaningful approaches to learning, teaching, and assessment.
Brian has a sustained interest in how assessment can shape learner motivation, confidence, belonging, and equity within higher education. His doctoral research explored academic self-efficacy, and this continues to inform his work on learner confidence, participation, and capability development across diverse educational contexts.
He contributes strategically to institutional and sector-wide conversations relating to assessment redesign, professional learning, digital capability, and the responsible integration of generative AI in higher education. His current work includes supporting GenAI literacy development, assessment adaptation, and critical engagement with emerging technologies through collaborative and community-based approaches to educational enhancement.
Brian has particular expertise in reflective and dialogic approaches to learning, evaluation, and professional development, including the use of creative and arts-informed methods within higher education practice. His work is informed by a strong commitment to authentic learning environments that foreground process, criticality, and participation alongside educational outcomes.
In recognition of his contribution to collaborative innovation and GenAI literacy development across the UK and Ireland, Brian was named a Jisc Community Champion in 2026.
