Professor Barbara Dass has lectured in the School of Art and Design since 1986 and has engaged in a wide range of scholarly activities. Professor Dass has been involved in external collaborative projects developing pedagogies to support education for sustainability in creative practice. She has received a number of awards for pedagogic research including a national Art Design Media-Higher Education Academy (ADM-HEA) award for a research project on sustainable art and design practice that culminated in a five day symposium on Rathlin Island entitled ‘Celebrating the October Wind’ (see image). Barbara’s personal creative practice is located in woven textiles; she is currently building on her longstanding passion for crystallography and is researching dislocation and fault replication and its manifestation in interlaced structures. Professor Dass has been involved in a number of national Art and Design Higher Education organizations that include the Council for Higher Education in Art and Design, Art Design Media Subject Centre, and is an independent reviewer for the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme and the HEA Senior Teaching Fellowships. Professor Dass has had several faculty leadership roles (2002-2007), which have included quality assurance (Arts), teaching and learning (Art, Design and the Built Environment) and continuing professional development (Arts and Art, Design and the Built Environment).Barbara was Head of School for the School of Art and Design 2007-2012 and currently serves on a number of University committees, which include Senate, Academic Development Enhancement Committee, Educational Partnerships and International Affairs Committee and Academic, and Academic-related Staff Progress Standing Committee.
