Biography

Azadeh Chalabi is a Lecturer in School of Law and Transitional Justice Institute (TJI). In April 2015, she completed her PhD (with no correction) at University College London (UCL) Faculty of Laws. Azadeh also holds an LLB (with high honours) and LLM (with high honours). She was awarded three research scholarships from UCL Graduate School and UCL Faculty of Laws.Azadeh’s teaching interests are in the areas of Human Rights Law; Law and Development; Gender and Human Rights; Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; Public International Law; Comparative Law; Sociology of Law; Jurisprudence and Empirical Research Methods (qualitative and quantitative). Before joining Ulster, Azadeh was a teaching fellow in International Human Rights Law, Women’s Rights, Comparative Human Rights Law, and Human Rights and Criminal Law at UCL Faculty of Laws.Azadeh’s research generally focuses on the gap between human rights theory and human rights practice. Her main research interests include national human rights action plans, communities’ rights practices, business and human rights, the social ontological status of human rights from a critical realist perspective, and global networked governance for implementing human rights.All her work is published in peer reviewed journals and the majority appears in the leading journals in the area, including the European Human Rights Law Review, the International Journal of Human Rights, the Journal of Development in Practice, Human Rights Review and the Oxford Journal of Human Rights Practice. She is currently working on a book about National Human Rights Action Plans from theoretical, doctrinal, empirical and practical perspectives.Azadeh has also had various experiences in protecting human rights in the field. She has acted as human rights trainer and human rights advisor for different human rights NGOs.
