Biography

I am a Professor of Ageing and Health in the Institute of Nursing and Health Research at Ulster University.  My clinical background lies in the field of gerontological nursing and the care of older people.  I lead two interconnected programmes of research on 1) the impact of technology on people living with dementia and 2) improving leadership and quality of life in care homes.  I led an Impact Case Study for REF 2021 on ‘Changing Policy, Culture and Understanding in Dementia Care’.  I have an extensive publication profile with over 210 publications in a range of academic journals and I have presented at over 130 national and international conferences.  I have generated almost £5m in  grant income to support initiatives aimed at improving the lives of older people and their families with a particular focus on people living with dementia.  I am Director of ‘My Home Life’, Northern Ireland  (https://www.myhomelifeni.co.uk),  an internationally recognised leadership support programme for care home managers and leaders aimed at improving quality of life for residents, relatives and staff.  To date the programme has been implemented in over 132 care homes with clear evidence of impact on leadership and quality of life.  This has culminated in a recommendation by the Department of Health (Northern Ireland) to implement the programme in all  care homes across the province.   I am Principal Investigator on the ongoing InspireD (Individual Specific Reminiscence in Dementia) research study which showed the impact of personalised reminiscence, facilitated by an App, on emotional wellbeing and quality of relationships for people living with dementia and their family and carers.   The InspireD app is now used in over 30 countries and is free to download from the Apple App and Google Play stores and from the InspireD project website (https://www.theinspiredapp.com).  The InspireD app won Highly Commended for ‘Mobile App of the Year’ at the 2021 Digital DNA Awards  and was Runner-Up in the World JAIN Challenge 2022 competition for best technical product to support people living with dementia.  I am a member of three Editorial Boards: ‘Dementia: The International Journal of Social Research and Practice’, ‘The International Journal of Older People Nursing’ and ‘Health Expectations'.  I was President of the All-Ireland Gerontological Nurses’ Association’ (2013-2019) and am a Fellow Ad Eundem of the  Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
