Biography

Asif Ali is a final-year PhD researcher at Ulster University in the School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, specialising in peptide-based therapeutics for diabetes and obesity.
He completed his undergraduate and master’s degrees in Biochemistry at the University of Kashmir (MSc awarded 31 July 2021).
Before starting his PhD, he worked as a Project Assistant at the CSIR‑Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM).

Asif comes from Kashmir — a region he describes as “…paradise on earth” — and this background shaped his decision to pursue higher education abroad in search of expanded academic opportunity. At Ulster University, he was drawn by a research focus aligned with his interests and the chance to work under leading supervisors, including Professor Peter Flatt and Nigel Irwin. During his PhD, he has published original research and review articles in high-impact journals (for example, “Comparative Effects of GLP-1 and GLP-2 on Beta-Cell Function, Glucose Homeostasis and Appetite Regulation”).
He has also gained academic experience including co-supervising undergraduates, delivering lectures, and peer-reviewing manuscripts. Beyond the lab, Asif has served as a Global Ambassador for Ulster University, participated in student clubs and societies, and contributed to cultural and diversity initiatives. His research supports the University’s broader strategy of developing novel peptide-hormone-based therapies for type 2 diabetes and associated metabolic disorders.
