"The science is clear”: State finally accepts that pyrrhotite is key cause of defective block crisis

Press/Media: Research

Description

The Department of Housing will now offer homeowners impacted by the defective concrete block scandal the opportunity to have their remediation options reviewed after scientific research points to pyrrhotite as the key cause of damage rather than mica.  The €2.7 billion defective concrete block grant scheme helps affected homeowners with the costs of demolishing or remediating damaged houses. The scheme offers five options ranging from demolition and reconstruction to partial rebuilding, which is a cheaper form of remediation. In a statement on Wednesday evening, the department said that it has accepted the findings of an in-depth research project.
