"Indicative votes, missing MPs and cabinet rifts"

Press/Media: Expert Comment

Description

Letter to Editor published by The Times regarding the extent to which it is fair to draw a comparison between Prime Minister May and the 1840s PM Robert Peel.

Subject

"Sir,

For cabinet ministers to compare the prime minister to Robert Peel seems rather inappropriate (report, 1 April, and letter, 2 April). Peel lowered the tariffs on British imports from the rest of the world and that split his party but was the right thing to do. If Mrs May and others decide that we must remain within the  EU's customs union then lower import tarifs are precisely what we will not get".
