"How will COVID-19 affect the Northern Ireland economy?"

Press/Media: Expert Comment

Description

Blog piece (co-authored with Dr Graham Brownlow, Queen's University Management School) as part of the lauch of the ESRC funded, UK-wide Economics Observatory to collect work on the economics of the pandemic.

Subject

What sort shape might the COVID-19 recession take in NI: V-shaped, L-,U- or even W-shaped?

The ambivalent impact of the huge increase in government spending and intervention: in the short run propping up incomes and demand but in the long run very possibly adding to NI's historical problems of dependency, soft budget constraints and moral hazard in decision making.

Possible policy responses.
