Defective concrete figures may exceed national estimates

Press/Media: Research

Description

Geoscience experts have said the scale of Ireland’s defective concrete crisis may be significantly larger than current State estimates.

Research shows estate-level analysis suggesting approximately 12,000 homes in Donegal estates alone may fall within a high-risk category. This figure relates only to housing estates and excludes one-off housing, social housing, community buildings and commercial properties.

The release of the figures comes ahead of a briefing on the subject in Leinster House today, organised by Charles Ward TD, leader of  the 100% Redress Party. The event will feature presentations from Dr Chris Brough and Professor Paul Dunlop. Dr Brough is Operations Director of Petrolab, a specialist mineralogical and materials consultancy. Professor Dunlop is Professor of Glaciology at Ulster University and has contributed to research on pyrrhotite and sulphide-related deterioration in Irish housing.
