From facial recognition to biometric policing, to machine learning, listening and sensing, all of everyday life has become transformed by technologies of algorithmic governance.The question is: How should we respond?Join the artistic director of Berlin based art and digital culture festival Transmediale and three of the curators of the exhibition Entanglement from the Venice Biennale 2021 for a discussion about how it is that we might live with and against the digital technologies that are transforming everyday life.
Alan Butler is an artist and educator living and working in Dublin, Ireland. Educated at the National College of Art and Design, Ireland, and Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore, his artwork has been featured in over 150 galleries, museums, and festivals around the world, most often exploring the material and symbolic qualities of digital objects. His work is also featured in the collections of the Arts Council of Ireland, IMMA: the Irish Museum of Modern Art, The National Gallery of Ireland, and Trinity College Dublin, among many others. His work is represented by Green on Red Gallery, Dublin.
David Capener is an architect, writer and educator. In collaboration with the multidisciplinary design group ANNEX he recently co-curated and designed Entanglement, the Irish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2021. His practice critically examines the spaces produced by our contemporary technological condition. He is a lecturer in architecture at Ulster University. He has written for The Irish Times, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, and numerous other print and online publications.
Donal Lally is an architect and co-founder of the architectural office zero-degree machine [z-dm]. In collaboration with the multidisciplinary design group ANNEX he recently co-curated and designed Entanglement, the Irish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2021. He has recently published articles in Strelka Magazine and Archplus, and given talks at the Floating University (Berlin), Berlin University of the Arts, and at the UCD School of Architecture. Donal is an assistant lecturer in design theory at the TU Dublin School of Creative Arts.
Gavin Mueller is the author of Breaking Things at Work work and Media Piracy in the Cultural Economy: Intellectual Property and Labor under Neoliberal Restructuring. He is a Contributing Editor at Jacobin, and a member of the Viewpoint Magazine editorial collective. Lecturer in Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, where he is part of the New Media and Digital Culture team.
Nora O’ Murchú is the artistic director of Transmediale. She is a curator & researcher, whose research examines the intersections between the fields of art, design, software studies, and politics. Her multidisciplinary practice embraces narratives, and fictions and results in objects, exhibitions, and interventions. Her research aims to help people understand how complex socio-technical systems are imagined, built & used. She has curated exhibitions and events for institutions including Akademie Schloss Solitude, LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Rua Red, and The Science Gallery. Notable exhibitions include Coded After Lovelace at Whitebox Gallery in New York and Land/Sea/Signal at Rua Red in Dublin. She has held positions as a research associate for the Interaction Design Centre at the University of Limerick, the Interaction Research Studio at Goldsmiths, and CRUMB at the University of Sunderland. Her research on the impact of technology on curating has been published at Goldsmiths Press, Taylor & Francis and Springer.
Rachel O’Dwyer is a lecturer in Digital Cultures in the School of Visual Culture in the National College of Art & Design, (NCAD) Dublin. Her forthcoming book published by Verso looks at TOKENS and investigates all the ways in which platforms are issuing and circulating new money-like instruments, from airtime, to messages, memes, emotes, data and everything in between.
