Description

Power at the Edge: Constructing, Contesting and Reimagining Borders (1)

Borders are central to the ideological and spatial division of States, delimiting their boundaries (Brunet-Jailly, 2005), and ordering space (Laine 2021). They are also designed both to prevent access to those who might be considered somehow ‘undesirable’ (Newman 2003), whilst remaining historically more or less invisible to elites to the extent that the world could appear almost borderless (Rumford 2012). This session explores how unequal relationships with borders are experienced and particularly how borders, both real and imagined, can be contentious, debated and polemicised.
