This invited talk was delivered as part of an international event attended by researchers, clinicians and policy markers from Europe and South America. The event consisted of a focused seminar, which included presentations by leading scientists in the area of low-calorie sweeteners, and followed up with a workshop that aimed to develop guidance from the use of low-calorie sweeteners.

A major output from the event was a review paper entitled, 'Ibero–American Consensus on Low- and No-Calorie Sweeteners: Safety, Nutritional Aspects and Benefits in Food and Beverages.'
