Description
The Iconic World of Faber and Faber Cover DesignWith Theo Inglis, Eleanor Crow, Donna Payne and chaired by Dr Ruth Brolly
When you think of Seamus Heaney’s Death of a Naturalist, one of the things that immediately springs to mind is that iconic cover to the original edition, designed by Bertholde Wolpe.
A German-Jewish typographer recently returned from an Australian internment camp, Wolpe created the Albertus font and, due to financial constraints after the war, designed the Faber book covers by hand. His striking font and the simplicity of his designs gave these jackets a distinctive quality that became strongly identified with Faber’s brand and has continued to inspire generations of designers.
Introduced by Dr Ruth Brolly, with background information of the work of Wolpe in relation to the Heaney book covers, this event will cover Wolpe's innovative typographic solutions to early book cover design. The introductory presentation will be followed by a question and answer session, directed by Dr Brolly, to further expand on the knowledge about this important typographic designer.
Subsequent to Dr Brolly's introductory presentation, further presentations will be provided by the participants to include: Graphic designer and writer Theo Inglis; Eleanor Crow, Senior Designer at Faber & Faber and Donna Payne, Creative Director at Faber & Faber, who will discuss Wolpe’s work, the early Heaney covers and the evolving nature of book cover design.
Theo Inglis is a freelance writer and graphic designer, focusing mainly on the design of books. He studied Critical Writing in Art & Design at the Royal College of Art and has written for the likes of Grafik, Creative Review, Eye magazine and Monotype. His debut book, Mid-Century Modern Graphic Design, will be published this May by Batsford books.
Eleanor Crow is a Senior Designer at Faber & Faber. She has an MA in Communication Design from Central Saint Martins, and has worked at Random House, the Folio Society and at Faber & Faber. She has guest lectured at a number of universities in the UK and in Prague in design and illustration.
