Tapping into Resilience: Introducing Therapeutic Art Practice within Pre-registration Midwifery Education to Enhance the Development of Resilience and Promote Mental Wellbeing

A one-hour Therapeutic-Art-Practice workshop was introduced to the pre-registration midwifery programme with an aim to enhance resilience and the ability to cope with competing demands during the educational journey and beyond. The workshop was facilitated by an art therapist assisted by a member of the teaching team. Within a safe environment students used the medium of art to portray the complexities of juggling study, clinical practice and life's demands; thus, making sense of their ability to process and understand their responses to stress and actively work through them. Preliminary evaluations demonstrate a positive student response, with a formal evaluation planned.
