The keynote session discussed the Taking Boys Seriously (TBS) 10 Principles of Relational Education as the pinnacle of 18 years of longitudinal action research with adolescent boys, teachers, and youth workers in some of the most deprived communities across Northern Ireland. These principles capture core features that boys and their educators have consistently reported as transformational in motivating and re-engaging boys in their education and learning. The research aims to influence educational pedagogy, policy, and practice to bring about improved educational experiences and outcomes for boys who encounter compounded educational disadvantage. TBS places the unfiltered voices and experiences of boys at the centre, constantly learning from them, valuing their beliefs and perspectives, and involving them in the development of supportive educational ecosystems. The TBS principles offer a reflective and reflexive framework for creating educational cultures and environments where boys, and all learners, thrive.
