A funded online Conference-Symposium on 16-17th June 2021, chaired by Golden as PI, Dr Gavan Rafferty as CoI, and Prof Gerry Leavey as CoIs for Belfast THRI(VES), a 6-month pilot partnership between Ulster University [Urban Research Lab] and Belfast City Council, to inform how Belfast’s public spaces can more effectively and inclusively contribute to the liveability of the city and the wellbeing of its inhabitants; funded through Belfast City Council via the Department for Communities Covid-19 Recovery Revitalisation Programme, and the Department for Infrastructure. Over 125 registered attendees participated with two days of events including international speakers and panel sessions sharing and exploring lessons on balancing the needs of people, business, and public services to transform city spaces into more connected, inclusive, liveable, and sustainable places. Speakers and panels brought together academic, business, Government and community voices to collectively address common social, economic, and public health challenges to reshape and reopen public spaces in transformative ways; and to examine the types of evidence needed to support liveable city policy, planning, and design initiatives.16th June evening events featured four international speakers, Chaired by Dr Golden, hosted by Dr Wendy Austin, MBE, and opened by DfC Minister Deirdre Hargey and DfI Minister Nichola Mallon.17th June featured a Belfast-focused morning session, Chaired by Golden with prominent BCC and DfI keynote speakers and panel discussions on data, equality, and public-private investment in city spaces; followed by an afternoon RTPI-UPLAN-led Next Generation Planning session Chaired by Dr Rafferty with RTPI Keynote and Respondents, and MSci Planning, Regeneration, and Development Research Presentations facilitated by Dr Linda McElduff, Lecturer in Planning, Course Director MSc Planning, Regeneration and Development.
