In this talk, we will look at the concepts in artificial intelligence and summarize the many sub disciplines such as robotics, natural language processing, machine learning and computer vision to name but a few. We will, however, mainly look at the ideas and concepts behind machine learning and point out the obvious differences between machine and human intelligence. Having discussed the limitations and the benefits of machine learning, users will be in a better position to critically appraise machine learning studies and to evaluate and assess the quality of machine learning algorithms and products that might be used in their clinical practice. The talk will also outline some of the risks in using machine learning and discuss how we can mitigate 'automation bias', which is when the end user can over trust the algorithm.
