Description

WP3 Rathlin Residential – 14th-18th October

The Rathlin Residential, held from the 14th to the 18th of October, aimed to connect and integrate the residents of Rathlin Island into our growing design ecosystem. Our approach involved site excursions, demonstrations, workshops, show and share sessions, and an end-of-week showcase, where participants could present their work and ideas.

The event featured five thematic working groups:
- New Life, Old Ruins (focus on buildings and lifestyle)
- Cross-connections (exploring far-future casting)
- Birds & Materials (exploring materials like wool, mycelia, and sea plastic)
- Water Stories (focusing on holistic system design)
- Archiving Futures (future tourism and heritage)

Participants took part in the event:
- ‘FII Fellowships’
- ‘FII Ecosystem Engineers’, including industry partners
- Academic researchers

Throughout the week, informal drop-in sessions were hosted at various locations, offering a space for residents and participants to share ideas and stories. These sessions provided an opportunity to explore how the design experience could support local interests, projects, or challenges. The residents of Rathlin Island played a crucial role in shaping new ways of thinking, and the discussions offered fresh perspectives and potential resources for the island community.

The residential stay was not only an opportunity to learn from Rathlin’s unique way of life, landscape, and traditions but also to contribute to the community in meaningful ways.
