Ulster University’s School of Applied Social and Policy Sciences proudly hosted its first-ever social work education conference, ‘Pedagogies of Engagement and Collaborations for Learning in Social Work Education’ at the Derry~Londonderry campus on 13 November.  



This milestone event brought together a vibrant mix of social workers, practice teachers, inter-professional educators, and students to celebrate and advance pedagogic research and collaborative learning in social work education. 



The conference served as a showcase of Ulster University’s commitment to fostering partnerships that elevate learning experiences both in the classroom and through practical placements, including unique global mobility opportunities for students.  



The event not only highlighted key advancements but also inspired discussions on innovative teaching practices that bridge theory and practice in social work education. 


Attendees were treated to two engaging keynote addresses:   

Dr. Pamela Trevithick, globally recognised for her seminal work, ‘Social Work Skills and Knowledge: A Practice Handbook’, shared insights ahead of the book’s eagerly awaited updated release.  

Professor Phil Newton, Neuroscientist from Swansea University Medical School, captivated the audience with his evidence-based exploration of learning, teaching, and assessment practices in higher education. His reflections on the conference underscored the value of inter-professional education.

Conference sessions offered attendees valuable insights into innovative projects and research, including:   

The UU Toolkit for Community Collaboration:  

Designed to support authentic partnerships in teaching, learning, and assessment, presented by Dr. Jean Daly Lynn (Lecturer in Psychology) and Dr. Katy Pedlow (Senior Lecturer). 

Transformative Global Experiences:  

Social work students shared stories from their impactful summer school experience in South East Asia, showcasing the personal and academic growth achieved through global mobility.   

Peer Learning Bubble Model:  

A collaboration between Ulster University and Bryson that enhances student and professional learning.   

Placement Professional Competence Model:  

Dr. Denise MacDermott launched this pioneering education model aimed at assessing students in professional placements.
