Description
Artist seminar led to the MFA group at the Belfast School of Art.Summary: This seminar will explore Giuliana Bruno’s supposition that the moving-image is contemporary cartography; a medium that maps and communicates spatial environments. Drawing over Hito Steyerl’s text ‘In Free Fall’ and Marine Hugonnier’s 2002 film ‘Ariana’ to structure the seminar, we will consider the manner that film and cartography have and continue to inflect one another, as well as sought to render physical landscapes and orientate viewers within the representational frame. Introducing the idea of ‘disorientation’, the emergence of counter-cultures within these two fields will be considered, and the creative and critical potential of foregoing pre-determined positions and geographies in favour of charting new terrain.
Alasdair is an artist and researcher based in Belfast, who will discuss his own moving-image praxis and present exercises, in relation to the topic.
