Learning to be Responsive (in Real Time) - Baba Yaga
Building on a set of connected Research through Practice work (2020-24), Researchers at Ulster University presented the outcomes of a collaborative project working alongside Oral Storytellers at Tale Time and the production company OffWorld. The project Baba Yaga (2024) explores ways to downstream approaches we employ in Virtual Production to make innovations in oral storytelling. The project explores how screen industry innovations in Real-Time Rendering processes can be mapped to other types of creative practice to explore new creative synergies.
The project explored ways to address the tensions in the use of media to enhance and augment traditional Oral Storytelling which needs to respond on the fly to its audience engagement levels and the use of traditional linear media (video, animation, audio) which can disrupt the flow, immersion and responsiveness of the narrative. The work explores links between oral storytelling traditions and narrative design in video games to create new story shapes.
