Description
In 2018, Ideal Standard Group International commissioned Dr Saul M Golden to undertake an evidence study Rethinking the Commercial Washroom, and invited Dr Golden to take part in an expert Panel Discussion during Milan Design Week, Chaired by research, professor and editor Paolo Ferrarini and Ideal Standard CEO Torsten Tuerling. The panel discussed the washroom as one of the most important human occupied spaces in a building; one requiring further understanding as how they are used and what expectations of end-users could help a designer or architect create better washroom spaces.Ideal Standard brought Dr Golden together with a panel of renowned industry professionals and academics fom Domus Academy to discuss the role of the commercial bathroom now and the challenges – and opportunities – this presents for architects and designers along with additional themes including:
•How commercial spaces are changing - for example the impact of shared spaces, co-working, modern lifestyles – how these trends (ie cycling to work) are affecting the use and design of commercial bathrooms
•How the washroom can contribute to the overall image of the building
•Architectural challenges posed by Total Cost of Ownership considerations
•Collaboration between industry and specifiers (possible connection with BIM – cost reduction, speed and efficiencies). How tools can encourage a multidisciplinary, holistic view on projects encompassing all parties in the chain. The need for evidence-based research and the roles manufacturers can play in providing this
