Description

'The objective of the course “Experiences of indignity and inequality in society” is to delve into literature and discussions about the intersection between subjectivity and dignity. We discuss concepts such as dignity, recognition, worth, shame, pride, and self-esteem and explore how these subjective experiences of emotions are connected to wider societal structures and social hierarchies of belonging. Why are some people deemed more worthy than others in society and how does that relate to employment and labor markets? What makes citizens feel included or excluded in society and what does inequality mean to citizens? How may encounters with the labor market and welfare state institutions give rise to the experience of dignity or indignity? How are experiences of indignity related to politics of everyday life? We discuss theories on recognition, worth, moral economy and stigma and we investigate the meaning and role of emotions (blame, shame, stigma, insecurity). The course also has an explicit aim in exploring the challenges in studying such phenomena. Esteemed international scholars, Michele Lamont (Harvard University) and Ofer Sharone (University of Massachusetts-Amherst) frame the discussions based on their important work on these issues. Finally, students will get the chance to get in-depth feedback on their work from the course convenors and fellow participants'. (Course Description from Roskilde University)
