Description

Session: Sustainability, Circular Economies & Environmental Futures; Creative & Critical Technologies and their Human Interfaces.

Future Island-Island is one of four UK Green Transition Ecosystems (GTEs), which are large scale projects that focus on translating the best design-led research into real-world benefits. Phase 1 (2023-2025) involved five overarching work packages collaborating with Rathlin Island community, as a lens and teacher. It worked in a just and critically reflective way through many co-design practices, towards a place-based green transition. By managing product waste, nature-based or organic waste as a commodity and enhancing sustainable tourism through digital technologies, the project aims to protect and enhance the local environment and community resilience against climate change impacts. Climate resilience is enabled through design interventions, and this can reduce the vulnerability of Rathlin Island, create sustainable economic opportunities and improve environmental health. In phase 1 (as of June 2025) the project helped leverage >£9,395,339 from 21 streams of funding, generated £708,436 of in-kind contributions from 60 tracks of funding. There have been 104 new partnerships across research, business, public and third sector organisations. The reach has included 2,061 participants and 4,121 visitors through engagement events. Phase 2 (2025-2028) aims to deepen the Rathlin Island relationship and to extend to others places across Ireland, Argyle & Island and the Nordic circle through three primary themes.
