From Invisible to Visible: Educating Community Pharmacists in Carer Recognition and Support

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

This presentation for community pharmacy training addressed unpaid carers who remain invisible within the healthcare system. Drawing on personal experience as both a person with Type 1 Diabetes and a parent caring for a child with the condition, the talk examined how many carers spend years not recognising themselves as such. These invisible carers face reduced work hours, financial insecurity, and isolation linked to serious health impacts.
Whilst carers manage complex medical care at home, they rarely access healthcare for themselves, a blind spot in traditional surveillance. Community pharmacists encounter carers more frequently than any other healthcare professionals, presenting a unique opportunity for identification through simple recognition: "Are you getting any support as their carer?" This work connects to my PhD research on identifying at-risk populations who remain invisible to standard surveillance mechanisms, emphasising accessible community touchpoints for early intervention.
