Description

Festival of Tomorrow Children's Programme - Extraordinary Sparks: Kids Design Workshops

4 workshops that were part of the children's programme for the Festival of Tomorrow in Swindon, England, from 9-10 February 2026. A total of 221 children from 4 Key Stage 2 Swindon primary schools participated in these environmental board game workshops. Children learnt about game mechanics and, in groups, designed a game that addressed an environmental concern e.g., marine plastic pollution, animal habitat loss and land pollution. Children then presented these completed games, with their game rules, to each other as part of the workshop activity, which helped to encourage public speaking and collaborative working. These skills taught them confidence, design thinking and creativity to address environmental issues and was seen, by the teachers, as an encouraging activity to bolster confidence in environmental learning using relatively little materials but big ideas and imagination. A total of 58 unique games were designed.
