Evaluation of an AI user interface (UI) designed collaboratively by a multidisciplinary team at a designathon event

Background/Methods

Even though they are regarded as end users, imaging professionals such as radiologists and radiographers are rarely included in the design of radiological AI user interfaces. Radiologists, radiographers and students were recruited via social media and the researchers’ network to participate in a designathon event. A designathon event was undertaken including a series of workshops with end users and designers. All stakeholders provided their input for a novel prototype made up of their preferred UI components. The evaluation of this AI UI was through a usability questionnaire encompassing open questions and adapted System Usability Scale (SUS) questions. Open questions will be analysed via thematic analysis and SUS questions will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics.

Aim

The aim of the study was to evaluate the acceptance of a chest radiograph AI User Interface (UI) prototype made in a designathon through a usability questionnaire.

Results

63% of respondents responded positively when asked about the prototype’s perceived ease of use without external support. 37% highlighted the “intuitive” components of the chest AI UI prototype. Respondents also felt that the proposed dotted line on the prototype did not interfere with the image, which could be an improvement to existing AI UIs used in practice. These can overlay the pathology with colour to highlight an area of interest.


Conclusion

The evaluation of this chest radiograph AI UI prototype has insightful findings on AI UI preferences, especially as it was influenced by end-users, commonly forgone in the design process. This novel research in identifying preference for AI UIs has the potential to shift the way imaging professionals accept and view AI.
