Empowering Educators with AI: From Concept to Reality at The National Conference on Generative Artificial Intelligence in Education June 2025

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

You could fill a Large Language Model with the theory around how Gen AI is going to impact the future of learning and teaching but what is the reality of landing this technology in a real-life school situation? Damian will outline the carefully managed steps taken to implement and measure the impact of Gen AI on a broad range of school-based learning, teaching, and administrative activity. His talk will demonstrate the methodology used by the Education Authority NI EdIS/C2k team to lead and land a Global first and speak about the true impact of Microsoft Copilot for 365 and Google Gemini on education in NI. Sammy will outline the tangible impact of this work on teaching, learning, and administrative efficiencies, drawing directly from the experiences of almost 100 educators who participated in the proof-of-concept study. Highlighting the critical role of professional learning and policy development in ensuring the ethical and effective integration of GenAI tools, he will discuss the nuanced perspectives of educators—acknowledging both their optimism about AI’s ability to reduce workloads and enhance student support, as well as their concerns. His talk will provide a data-informed analysis of AI's early successes in Northern Ireland's classrooms, reflecting real-world case studies of how schools are leveraging GenAI to personalise learning, support SEN students, and streamline administrative tasks.
