Embodied in Ink: Engaging with Tattoos as a Visual Language which Communicate Wellbeing, Identity and Commemoration

Activity: Talk or presentationPoster presentation

Description

Tattoos could be described as ‘visual artefacts’; they speak to their moment of
creation and provide a fascinating window into the ‘microcultures’ of contemporary
society. Studies exploring the use of tattoos within the realms of trauma and mental
health have described their capacity to re-story interpersonal narratives, induce a
sense of agency, make meaning, and heal from traumatic experiences. This poster
proposes an innovative and novel approach that engages with tattoos as creative
objects of insight, transformation and communicative potential which can provide an alternative pathway into understanding and supporting the inner world of an
individual and their needs.
