Description

C.S. Lewis is known and loved throughout the world as a writer of children’s stories, popular apologetics, science fiction, and literary criticism. Through his many years spent living in England, teaching at Oxford and later Cambridge, and by his close association with the literary circle the Inklings, Lewis is often thought, even by his most ardent fans, to have been English. But C.S. Lewis was born in Ulster, spent the early part of his childhood in east Belfast, and continued to visit the island of Ireland throughout his life. He referred to himself both as an Ulsterman and, in certain contexts, as an Irishman, until the day he died. This symposium will address the ‘Ulsteriority’ of C.S. Lewis, exploring his deep roots in the region and on the island that he called home. As chief organizer, I created the concept for the event, invited the speakers, promoted the event in person and on social media, budgeted, secured and liaised with vendors, and managed operations on the day.
