Creating a user-friendly chest radiograph AI user interface through a multidisciplinary designathon

Activity: Talk or presentation › Poster presentation

Description

Background/Methods

At present there is currently a lack of user interface (UI) standardisation within AI in radiology and there is a need for a human-centric approach to encourage AI adoption. Input from the service user is desirable to design the AI UI to ensure acceptance and successful implementation into clinical practice. A designathon was conducted to create a chest radiograph AI UI. This is a time constrained event involving a range of stakeholders to actively participate in the creation of a prototype.

Aim

To hold a designathon event for the creation of a chest radiograph AI User Interface (UI) prototype.

Methodology

A designathon event was successfully held with 14 participants which included radiologists, radiographers, interaction designers, students and PPI as participants, recruited via social media and via emailing the researchers’ network. The event encompassed a series of participatory co-design workshops. These included an (i) ideation session, (ii) a card sorting exercise and (iii) a prototype co-designing session with interaction designers and students.

Results

Participants listed their expectations for an ideal chest radiograph AI UI on post-it notes, these were then organised in terms of least important to most important in the card sorting exercise to provide an ideal visual hierarchy. Identified expectations included AI algorithm sensitivity, patient age, gender etc. A prototype of the ideal chest AI UI based on the mock-ups made on the prototype session was made on the day by design experts and presented to the imaging attendees for feedback during the designathon.

Conclusion

The designathon event allows multidisciplinary collaboration within the context of AI in radiology. This novel research has the potential to shift the way users are involved in the design of AI UIs, subsequently advancing integration in practice.
