Description

Title: Dealing with controversial issues and sensitivities in the Decade of Centenaries

The paper identifies and examines sensitivities in relation to the second half of the ‘Decade’ which compound challenges already encountered in the commemoration of events in the first half of the ‘Decade’'. The paper posits that present day political contention over current constitutional frameworks and the legacy of the ‘Troubles’ will find many receptive hooks on which to attach itself when considering that century old history. The second half of the 'Decade' encompasses types of violence similar to those of the modern ‘Troubles’, familiar locations of that political violence, and the process of partition and the creation of the Northern Ireland state. Potential forms of engagement and mitigation are discussed.
