Description

Belfast Feminist Film School (BFFS) is an innovative 5-day intensive training programme initiated by Dr Jolene Mairs Dyer, Dr Jennie Carlsten, Oonagh Parish and Jan Uprichard in 2022. Our organisational and leadership model is unique in that all staff involved are Co-Directors alongside Director Dr Jolene Mairs Dyer. Twenty female-identifying participants, recruited from partnerships with community groups and via general publicity, are introduced to feminist film theory and filmmaking practice. We watch and discuss films from key female directors such as Andrea Arnold, Lily Ana Amirpour, Margo Harkin and Olivia Wilde. Participants take part in hands-on workshops that provide training in key filmmaking skills: screenwriting, cinematography, sound recording and editing. Participants work in small groups to write, film and edit their own short films. We end the week by screening the films and finish with a pizza party and feminist disco. Participants pay a £25 registration fee to secure their place. BFFS is unique in that we actively strive to redress barriers such as caring responsibilities and travel costs that disproportionately affect women by providing a £200 bursary to up to 50% of our participants. In addition, BFFS participants retain access to a dedicated camera and sound kit as well as post-production facilities after graduation.
