Arts & Culture: A Bridge to Health Futures

Activity: Participating in or organising an eventParticipating in a conference, workshop, ...

Description

This seminar examines arts, culture, health and wellbeing through a
framework that connects engagement mechanisms, human development,
situated cultural lived experience, health and the role of cultural and
creative industries.
Recent research (1) has identified several pathways through which arts
engagement influences health, including emotion regulation, cognitive
restoration, stress reduction and a sense of self. Arts-based engagement
also operates as a human developmental process. Cultural participation
supports attention, awareness of self and others, and a stronger sense of
self through embodied participation and safe relational spaces(2)
.
The discussion draws on a sociological perspective on materiality,
institutional trust and contested meanings in health-related lived
experience. Within this frame, health institutions, cultural and creative
industries, artists, publishers, audiovisual producers, digital platforms,
museums and heritage organisations are part of the practical conditions
that make cultural-health work possible. They shape the formats through
which people encounter culture and simultaneously raise questions about
the conditions in which cultural workers develop and sustain their practices.
