A Short Tour of Artificial Intelligence: Stopping at ‘AI Ethics’, ‘Machine Learning’ and ‘GenAI’

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

This session will provide a short overview of the history and future of AI followed by a discussion on what AI is and perhaps what AI isn't. This will, hopefully, help us to think about some important philosophical ideas, such as the idea that human intelligence and artificial intelligence can be complementary. We will discuss different approaches to creating digital intelligence such as manually programming knowledge into a computer (expert systems) vs. allowing a computer to learn by itself (machine learning / reinforcement learning etc.) vs. generative AI. We will discuss how machines learn and the importance of using high quality data for this learning to take place. We will then acknowledge ethical issues with using AI-based algorithms (e.g. potential bias etc.) and perhaps discuss how these can be mitigated (e.g. impact assessments). Some algorithms may provide accurate predictions without providing any explanation or reasoning/rationale behind the decision; hence, we will also discuss the importance of explainable AI, especially if you are building accountability into a product or service. Finally, we hope to present how computers process language, which could be text or audio. This may include a review of topics such as smart speakers/chatbots, NLP and LLMs. The overall aim of the session is to develop an understanding of key AI concepts, ideas and emerging issues related to AI technologies.
